What is An Adrenal Gland ?
The adrenal glands are small, triangular hormone-producing glands located above each kidney. They release vital hormones into the bloodstream, including cortisol, adrenaline, and aldosterone, to help regulate stress response, blood pressure, metabolism, and immune function. Although they are quite small, the adrenal glands are extremely important to overall body balance.
Who Needs Adrenalectomy ?
- Adrenal Tumors: These are abnormal growths on the adrenal glands. They may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Some tumors produce excessive hormones, leading to major health problems and requiring surgical removal of the cancer.
- Pheochromocytoma: A rare adrenal tumor that secretes excessive amounts of adrenaline, hence causing severe high blood pressure, headaches, palpitations, and excessive sweating. Surgical treatment is the only permanent remedy for this condition.
- Conn’s Syndrome: This is a condition caused by excessive aldosterone production by the adrenal gland, usually leading to hypertension and low levels of potassium. Surgical resection of the problematic adrenal gland may cure or improve blood pressure control.
-
Adrenal Cancer: Benign or malignant tumors may grow within the spleen. Should they become large, painful, or threaten to rupture and bleed, removal of the spleen may be indicated for patient safety and diagnostic reasons.
